Historical:

The Platycopiidae family has generally been placed following the Stephidae et Tharybidae (Rose, 1933 a). Sars (1911, 1919) draws the attention to the difficulty to classify this family in one of the sections defined by Giesbrecht (1892) and completed by Sars with the introduction of the Isokerandria.
The resemblance of the forms with the genus Pseudocyclopia was interpreted as a phenomenon of convergence due to an adaptation to the epibenthic or hyperbenthic way of life near the coasts.
Lang (1948) suggests to create the suborder Progymnoplea for this single family, considering the structure being primitive. This conception was contested by Andronov (1974) who estimates that if one adopts this point of view, one would be driven to multiply the orders and suborders. The author estimates nevertheless that this family corresponds to a superfamily close to ancestral forms.
Fosshagen (1985) elevates this group to the order level, for which the morphological characters are detailed by Huys & Boxshall (1991).
