Species Augaptilus spinifrons - Plate 1 of morphological figuresIssued from : T.S. Park in Fishery Bull. Fish Wild. Serv. U.S., 1968, 66 (3). [p.565, Pl.12, Figs.1-5].
Female: 1, habitus (dorsal); 2, forehead (right lateral side); 3, Md; 4, masticatory edge of Md; 5,P5.
Nota: P5 has a long seta on the posterior surface of the basis that extends beyond the end of the exopod; this seta is much longer than that figured by Sars (1925).

Species Augaptilus spinifrons - Plate 2 of morphological figuresIssued from : G.O. Sars in Résult. Camp. Scient. Prince Albert I, 69, pls.1-127 (1924). [Pl.LXXVII, figs.10-18].
Female: 10, habitus (dorsal); 11, forehead (lateral); 12, A2; 13, Md (masticatory edge); 14, P5.

Male: 15, forehead (lateral); 16, A2; 17, P5; 18, posterior part of urosome (dorsal).

Species Augaptilus spinifrons - Plate 3 of morphological figuresissued from : B. Morris in J. Fish. Res. Bd Canada, 1970, 27 (12). [p.2317, Fig.10, C-K].
Female (from off N Hawaii): C-D, forehead (lateral and ventral, respectively); E-F, urosome (lateral and ventral, respectively); G, Md (mandibular palp); H, Md (gnathobase).

Species Augaptilus spinifrons - Plate 4 of morphological figuresissued from : B. Morris in J. Fish. Res. Bd Canada, 1970, 27 (12). [p.2317, Fig.10, L-M].
Male (from N Hawaii): L, urosome (dorsal); M, P5.

Nota: This is the first record for the male of this species in the North Pacific.

Distribution map of Augaptilus spinifrons by geographical zones
Loc:
South Africa (E), Atlant. (tropical), Brazil S, Ibero-morocco Bay, Moroccan coast, off Azores, off Bermuda (Station "S"), Sargasso Sea, Medit. (Ligurian Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea), SW Indian, China Seas (East China Sea), Pacif. (W equatorial), Australia (Grear Barrier), Pacif. (equatorial), off Hawaii (N & NE), Pacif. (SE tropical), Barents Sea (in Dvoretsky & Dvoretsky, 2010, p.991, Table 2)
N: 21

(1) F: 3,3; (34) F: 3; (72) F: 3,55; (92) F: 3,85-3,44; M: 3,1; {F: 3,00-3,85; M: 3,1}

The mean female size is 3.420 mm (n = 5; SD : 0.3134). For one male specimen the body size is 3.1.
Rem.: epi-mesopelagic. Known to occur at less than 150 m depth (Matthews, 1972). Sargasso Sea: 0-500 m (Deevey & Brooks, 1977, Station "S").
The occurence of this species in the Barents Sea is surprising.
