Labidocera caudata  Nicholls, 1944   (F,M)
Ref.:
Nicholls, 1944 (p.13, Descr.F, figs.F); Silas & Pillai, 1976 (p.774); Greenwood & Othman, 1979 (p.237, Rem.F); McKinnon & Kimmerer, 1984 (p.169, Descr.M, Rem.F, figs.F,M)
Espèce Labidocera caudata - Planche 1 de figures morphologiquesissued from : A.D. McKinnon & W.J. Kimmerer in Proc. R. Soc. Vict., 1984, 96 (3). [p.171, Fig.2].
Female (from Bass Srrait, S Australia): a, habitus (dorsal (scale A); b, urosome (dorsal; scale B; c, idem (lateral; scale B); d, rostrum (scale B); e, right Md (cutting edge, inner surface; scale D); f, left Md (outer surface; scale D); g, P5 (posterior; scale B); h, basis of left P5 (anterior; scale B).
Scale bars: A 1.0 mm; B 0.25 mm; C 0.10 mm; D 0.10 mm.

Nota: Dorsal eye lenses smaller that of the male and separated by more than 2 times their diameter. In life, the 1st thoracic segment of most females was densely coloured red brown.. 5th thoracic segment almost symmetrical, the left being very slightly longer. Urosome 2-segmented. Genital segment with a large lobe produced posterio-dorsally, the margin of which is irregular. Anal segment small, asymmetrical. Left caudal ramus 1.37 times longer than the right ; the setae of the right ramus all have a bulbous basal portion and a attenuated distal portion, the ramus is hirsute on the dorsal and medial faces; the right ramus is similar in form, but smaller, the hairs are limited to the medial face of the ramus. Left and right P5 slightly asymmetrical, the right exopod slightly longer than the left ; there is a seta on the posterior face of each basipod, the anterior face of each basipod has a distal patch of long setules ; endopods are simple triangular segments

Espèce Labidocera caudata - Planche 2 de figures morphologiquesissued from : A.D. McKinnon & W.J. Kimmerer in Proc. R. Soc. Vict., 1984, 96 (3). [p.170, Fig.1].
Male: a-b, habitus (dorsal and lateral, respectively); scale A); c, tostrum (scale B); d, urosome (ventral; scale B); e, right A1 (segments 17 to 21; scale C); f, right Md (cutting edge, inner surface; scale D); g, left Md (cutting edge, outer surface; scale D); h, P5 (anterior; scale C); i, right P5 chela (posterior; scale D); j, terminal segment of left P5 (posterior; scale D).
Scale bars: A 1.0 mm; B 0.25 mm; C 0.10 mm; D 0.10 mm.

Nota: Form of the body similar to that of the female. Cephalosome with an indentation at about the mid-length in lateral view. Dorsal eye lenses large, densely pigmented, a second located in the protuberant medioventral eye. 2 lateral setules on the 4th thoracic segment and 4 on the 5th thoracic segment. Posterior corners of the 5th thoracic segement almost symmetrical, the right being very slightly longer. Urosome 5-segmented, with genital segment slightly asymmetrical, the left side slightly expanded. Geniculation between seglments 18- (19-21 fused) of the right A1. Coxa of rignt P5 with a plumose seta on the posterior surface ; chela with a ‘thumb’ about mid-length of the segment and arising near the base of exopodite 1, it is surrounded basally by a lamellate colla rand the concave face has a rough surface ; exopodite 1 has a fold giving the impression of a segment ; exopodite 2 forms the ‘finger’ of the chela . Left P5 with a plumose seta on the posterior surface of the basipod ; 1st exopod segment unornamented except for a small triangular spine on the outer distal corner; 2nd exopod segment hirsute at about mid-length on the posterior face, there is a 2nd similar but stronger spine on the same face, terminally the segment is produced into 2 large triangular processes, adjacent to which there is a single plumose seta on the inner margin.

Espèce Labidocera caudata - Planche 3 de figures morphologiquesissued from : J.G. Greenwood & B.H.R. Othman in J. Plankton Res., 1979, 1 (1). [p.237]
Characters in L. caudata compared with other species within the super-species detruncata (see L. cervi, L. farrani, L. detruncata, L. pavo, L. bataviae, L. madurae and L. sinolobata, with reference sources).

Rem.: For McKinnon & Kimmerer (1984, p.172) this species closely resembles L. madurae A. Scott, 1909. L. caudata, L. cervi and L. tasmanica all belong to the super species detruncata, reviewed by Greenwood & Ohman (1979).

This species belongs to the L. detruncatagroup (Fleminger, 1967).
