Phaenna latus  (Esterly, 1911)   (F)
Syn.: Onchocalanus latus Esterly, 1911 (p.326, Descr.F, figs.F); 1913 (p.183, Rem.); Sewell, 1948 (p.563); in CalCOFI regional list (MDO, Nov. 2013; M. Ohman, comm. pers.)

Fleminger, 1967 a (p.XII: tabl.1)
Species Phaenna latus - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissue from : C.O. Esterly in Univ. Calif. Publs Zool., 1911, 6 (14). [Pl.29, Fig.47]. As Onchocalanus latus.
Female (from San Diego Region): 47, head and two thoracic segments.
Nota: Body strongly depressed. Head rounded both in dorsal and side views. Last thoracic segment rounded at the sides. Cephalothorax widest just behind the suture between the head and thorax. Abdomen 4-segmented. Genital segment about twice as long as the 2nd, which is as long as the 3rd. Anal segment about one-third as long as the preceeding one. A1 24-segmented, as long as the cephalothorax. Endopod of A2 reaches about to the distal end of the 2nd basal

Species Phaenna latus - Plate 2 of morphological figuresissue from : C.O. Esterly in Univ. Calif. Publs Zool., 1911, 6 (14). [Pl.30, Fig.70]. As Onchocalanus latus.
Female: 70, part of Mx2 showing the sensory appendages.
Nota: Mx2 with 1 vermiform and 6 pencillate appendages; of the latter, 4 are slender and 2 very heavy.

Species Phaenna latus - Plate 3 of morphological figuresissue from : C.O. Esterly in Univ. Calif. Publs Zool., 1911, 6 (14). [Pl.31, Fig.97]. As Onchocalanus latus.
Female: 97, endopod of P4.
Nota: Exopod of all feet are 3-segmented and in the P1 each segment has a spine on the outer margin. Exopod not spinose on the surfaces, but in the P3 and P4, the 2nd segment of the endopod has groups or rows of heavy spines.

Rem.: Vervoort (1965, p.25, 26) considers, with doubt, this species as a synonym of Phaenna spinifera . Park (1983 a , p.319) and Bradford & al. (1983, p.67) consider this form as non-valid, in contrary to Fleminger (1967 a, p.XII) as Phaenna latus.
