Talacalanus maximus  (Brodsky, 1950)   (F)
Syn.: Xanthocalanus maximus Brodsky, 1950 (1967) (p.228, figs.F, Rem.); Tanaka & Omori, 1967 (p.247, figs.F); Tanaka & Omori, 1992 (p.269, Rem.); Galbraith, 2009 (pers. comm.)
Mixtocalanus robustus M: Brodsky, 1950 (1967, p.238, figs.M, non F)
Ref.:
Campaner, 1978 a (p.976, Rem.); Bradford & al., 1983 (p.70); Vyshkvartzeva, 1989 (p.23, Rem.)
Species Talacalanus maximus - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissued from : O. Tanaka & M. Omori in Publ. Sero Mar. Biol. Lab., 1992, 35 (4/5). [p.267, Fig.8, g-h]. As Xanthocalanus maximus.
Female (from Izu region, Japan): g, Mx2; h, sensory filaments of terminal part of Mx2.

Nota: Re-examination of female specimen described by Tanaka & Omori (1967) revealed that the leaf-like seta on 5th lobe of Mx2 is not as long as illustrated in their report and that endopod of Mx2 armed with 1 long vermiform and 7 short brushform sensory filaments, instead of 8 bud-like filaments.

Species Talacalanus maximus - Plate 2 of morphological figuresissued from : O. Tanaka & M. Omori in Information Bull on Planktology in Japan. Commemoration Number of Dr. Y. Matsue's Sixtieth Birthday, December 1967. [p.248, Fig.3]. As Xanthocalanus maximus.
Female: A, habitus (dorsal); B, A1; C, forehead (lateral); D, last thoracic segment and urosome (lateral right side); E, idem (dorsal); F, rostrum (fromtal view); G, A2; H, Md (mandibular palp); I, Md (cutting blade); J, Mx1.

Nota: Proportional lengths of urosomites and furca 43 : 16 : 13 : 28 = 100.
A1 extends to the end of furca.

Species Talacalanus maximus - Plate 3 of morphological figuresissued from : O. Tanaka & M. Omori in Information Bull on Planktology in Japan. Commemoration Number of Dr. Y. Matsue's Sixtieth Birthday, December 1967. [p.249, Fig.4]. As Xanthocalanus maximus.
Female: A, Mx2; B, sensory organ of Mx2; C, Mxp; D, P1; E, P2; F, P3; G, P4; H, P5.

Species Talacalanus maximus - Plate 4 of morphological figuresIssued from : K.A. Brodskii in Calanoida of the Far Eastern Seas and Polar Basin of the USSR. Opred. Fauna SSSR, 1950, 35 (Israel Program for Scientific Translations, Jerusalem, 1967) [p.228, Fig.139]. As Xanthocalanus maximus.
Female (from NW Pacif.): habitus (dorsal and lateral right side); R, rostrum; Mx, Mx1; Mp1, Mx2S1, P1; S2, P2; S5, P5.

Species Talacalanus maximus - Plate 5 of morphological figuresIssued from : K.A. Brodskii in Fauna USSR, Zool. Inst. Acad. Sci. USSR, 1950 (1967), 35. [p.239, Fig.150]. As Mixtocalanus robustus.
Male (from NW Pacif.): habitus (dorsal and lateral, respectively; Mp1 = distal part of Mx2; S1 = P1; S5 = P5; Ri = right side; Le = left side; R = rostrum.

Nota: Figure male located here for memory.
-Rostrum bifid but without defined filaments.
- A1 longer, reaching end of caudal rami.
- A2 exopod by 1/3 longer than endopod.
- Mx2 bears 2 setae with very large sherical tips.
- Outer spines of exopod of P1 very short.
Right P5 3-segmented, 1/5 as long as the 5th segment left leg; longest segment of left leg is the third, shortest the 5th, which is hairy and bears 2 short apical spines; spines present on distal margin of 3rd (1 spine) and 4th (2 spines) segments.

NZ: 2

Distribution map of Talacalanus maximus by geographical zones
Loc:
Japan , NW Pacif., off British Columbia (rare)
N: 3
Lg.:
(22) F: 9; (70) F: 9,8; {F: 9,00-9,80}
Rem.: bathy-abyssopelagic.
For Brodsky (1967, p.229) this species resembles the Atlantic species Xanthocalanus greeni Farran (= Talacalanus greeni) but differs in its larger size, the rounded posterior corners of the last thoracic segment and the lesser number of spines on he distal segment of P5 female.
