Xanthocalanus difficilis  Grice & Hulsemann, 1965   (F)
Ref.:
Grice & Hulsemann, 1965 (p.223, 235, Descr.F, figs.F); Bradford, 1973 (p.146, Rem.); Bradford & al., 1983 (p.71, 104); Vyshkvartzeva, 1999 (2000) (p.221)
Species Xanthocalanus difficilis - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissued from : G.D. Grice & K. Hulsemann in J. Zool., 1965, 146. [p.236, Fig.11].
Female: a, habitus (lateral left side); b, urosome (ventral); c, Md (mandibular palp); d, Md (cutting edge); e, Mx1 (spines on 1st inner lobe omitted); f, Mx2; g, Mxp; h, P1; i, P2; j, basipod segments of P3; k, endopod of P3; l, P4 (2nd and 3rd exopod segments missing); m, P5.
Nota: Rostrum triangular, filaments absent.
Head and 1st thoracic segment fused, 4th and 5th separate. A1 24-segmented (segments 8 and 9 fused).
Genital segment dilated laterally.
1st basipodal segments of P3 and P4 and surface of exopods and endopods of P1 to P4 with numerous spines.
P5 3-segmented, distal segment with long inner and short terminal spine; surface of 2nd and 3rd segments with scattered spines.

Distribution map of Xanthocalanus difficilis by geographical zones
Loc:
NE Atlant. (32°29'N, 20°09'W; 29°57'N, 22°58'W)
N: 1
Lg.:
(226) F: 1,34-1,15; {F: 1,15-1,34}
Rem.: bathy-abyssopelagic (1500-4000 m).
Probable in the Groupe "Scolecithrix ctenopus". Probable in the genus Scolecitrichopsis.
For Grice & Hulsemann (1965, p.235)this species differs from other species of Xanthocalanus by its single pointed rostrum, lack of filaments and structure of P5. This species resembles X. fallax (Sars, 1903).
