Xanthocalanus polarsternae Markhaseva, 1998 (F,M)
| | | | | | Syn.: | Xanthocalanus sp. nov.1 Sirenko & al., 1996 (p.349) | | | Ref.: | | | Markhaseva, 1998 (p.414, figs.F,M) | issued from : E.L. Markhaseva in J. Mar. Syst., 1998, 15. [p.416, Fig.2]. Female (from 77°04,7-77°11'' N, 125°10,7'-126°25' E). Ce = forehead (lateral); R = rostrum (ventral); PC = posterior corners of prosome; UR = urosome; Pmd = mandibular palp; Gnth md = gnathobase of Md; Ri = endopod. Scale bars: 0.1 mm. Nota : Average ratio prosome length : urosome length 3.8. A1 varies in length (may reach the last segment of prosome or to the posterior part of genital segment. Exopod of A2 1.5 times longer than endopod. Inner lobe1 of Mx1 with 8 apical and 4 posterior setae, inner lobes 2 and 3 with 3 and 4 setae, respectively ; basis with 5 setae near the base of endopod, endopod with 8 setae, exopod with 10 setae an douter lobe with 9 setae. 1st to 5th endites of Mx2 with 5, 3, 4, 3, 4 setae, respectively ; at both the 3rd and 5th endite one of the setae is transformed into a sensory appendage. Endopodite segments 2 to 5 with 4, 4, 3, 3+1 and 4 setae, respectively.

issued from : E.L. Markhaseva in J. Mar. Syst., 1998, 15. [p.417, Fig.3]. Male . Ce = forehead (lateral); R = rostrum (ventral); Pr = prosome; PC = posterior corners of prosome; UR = urosome; Pmd = mandibular palp; Gnth md = gnathobase of Md. Scale bars: 0.1 mm. Nota : Prosome length : urosome length mean ratio = 3.4. The setation of oral parts reduced in comparison with females. Md palp base with 2 setae. Inner lobe 1 of Mx1 with 3 posterior and 7 terminal setae, inner lobe 2 and 3 with 3 setae each ; endopod with 6 setae. Mxp syncoxa with 1 seta in proximal group, with only 1 brush-like setae in medial group and 3 setae in the distal group. P5 uniramous, 5-segmented, both left and right legs are nearly of the same length.

Bathypelagic, hyperbenthic. According to Markhaseva (1998, p.414) the species is very like X. harpagatus Bradford & Wells, 1983, but is distinguished from it by its size, the shape of the posterior corners of prosome and the number of setae on inner lobe 2 of Mx1 (3 setae contrary to 4 setae in X. harpagatus. | | | Last update : 02/02/2015
