Species Card of Copepod
Calanoida ( Order )
    Diaptomoidea ( Superfamily )
        Pontellidae ( Family )
            Pontella ( Genus )
Pontella valida  Dana, 1853   (F,M)
Syn.: no Pontalla valida : C.B. Wilson, 1950 (p.301, figs.F,M, Rem.);
Pontella surrecta (M) Wilson, 1950 (p.300, figs. M)
Ref.:
Sherman, 1967 (p.23, figs.F,M, Rem.); Silas & Pillai, 1973 (1976) (p.777, 852, Rem.); Bradford-Grieve, 1999 b (p.201, figs.F,M, Rem., figs.185, 194); Mulyadi, 2000 (p.195, figs.F, Rem.); 2002 (p.117, figs.F, Rem.); Phukham, 2008 (p.91, figs.F);
Species Pontella valida - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissued from : Mulyadi in Treubia, 2002, 32; [p.118, Fig.43].
Female (from Jakarta Bay): a, habitus (dorsal); b, 5th metasomal somite and urosome (dorsal); c, rostrum (anterior); d, A1; e, P4; f, P5.
Nota: 4th and 5th metasomal somites separate, posterolateral ends rounded. Cephalon triangular and rather sharply. Rostral lenses absent. Dorsal eye lenses large and set in contact with each other and more or less concealed by their opaque covering. Urosome 2-segmented. Urosomite 1 rectangular, with a rounded process on each side near base, left process slightly larger than right, each joinned to somite by a narrow neck. Caudal rami asymmetrical, right ramus longer, enlarged distally, more than twice as long as wide, inner margins hirsute.

Species Pontella valida - Plate 2 of morphological figuresissued from : N. Phukham in Species diversity of calanoid copepods in Thai waters, Andaman Sea (Master of Science, Univ. Bangkok). 2008. [p.174, Fig.48].
Female (from W Malay Peninsula): a-b, habitus (dorsal and lateral, respectively); c, urosome (dorsal); d, P5.

Body length after the drawing: F = 2.879 mm.

Species Pontella valida - Plate 3 of morphological figuresissued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve in The Marine Fauna of New Zealand: Pelagic Calanoid Copepoda. National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). NIWA Biodiversity Memoir, 111, 1999. [p.202, Fig.150, A-C]
Female (29°03.5'S, 168°36'E): A, habitus (dorsal); B, idem (rifgt lateral side); C, P5.

Sherman (1967) indicates no sign of a rostral lens in either sex, such a structure is observed on the posterior surface of the rostrum in the Southwest Pacific specimens.

The genital segment female is different of that represented by Mulyadi and Phukham , probably an another species (C.R.).

Species Pontella valida - Plate 4 of morphological figuresissued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve in The Marine Fauna of New Zealand: Pelagic Calanoid Copepoda. National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). NIWA Biodiversity Memoir, 111, 1999. [p.202, Fig.150, D-G]
Male (from 31°40'S, 177°33'W): D-E, habitus (dorsal and lateral, respectively); F, P5; G, terminal part of left P5.
