Posterolateral margin of cephalothorax somewhat truncatedUrosome 4-segmented, genital segment protruded ventrally. A1 extends slightly beyond caudal rami. Gnathobase of Mx1 large, exopod absent. Mx2 with 5 lobes, the first four each bearing a large and a small seta; the distal lobe has, in addition to a large and a small seta, 2 fine setae.

Chiridiella chainae female: 1 - Mx2 with 5 endites. 2 - Mx2 not strongly modified in comparison with typical. Setation first-fifth endites nearly of the same size. 3 - Endopod of P1 without external lobe. 4 - Exopod of P1 with 1 external spine. |
Chiridiella chainae female ; 1 - Mx2 lobes without spines arranged as pincers. 2 - 3rd, 4th and 5th lobes of Mx2 with enlarged hooklike spines . 4 - A1 longer than body, reaching just beyond the caudal rami. 5 - Cephalothorax around 4 times length of urosome. 6 - P1 exopod with 1 edge spine.

Distribution map of Chiridiella chainae by geographical zones

| | | Loc: | | | Caribbean Sea, Sargasso Sea (off Bermuda: Station "S" : 32°10'N, 64°30'W; | | | N: | 3 | | | Lg.: | | | (225) F: 3,56; {F: 3,56} | | | Rem.: | meso & bathypelagic. Sargasso Sea: 500-1000 m Deevey & Brooks, 1977, station "S"); This species resembles C. brachydactyla Sars, 1907, and C. subaequalis Grice & Hulsemann, 1965, but these two species have an exopod on Mx1. For Deevey (1974, p.465) the female from off Bermuda agrees with Grice’s description, although the endopods of legs 3 and 4 were 2-segmented (1st two segments not being completely separated). Mx2 is of the btachydactyla type, but more modified and reduced and represents an intermediate stage between the brachydactyla and macrodactyla types. | | | Last update : 02/09/2021 | |
