Study area in The Campos basin (Brazil) showing the seasonal variation of Amallothrix tenuiserrata (= Scolecithricella tenuiserrata) (ind.m3) at 1 m depth, during the dry season.

Nota: This species was recorded only during the dry season and in greater abundance in the 1 m and 250 m depth levels, with reduced densities in the 2,000 m depth level. T.C. Gopalakrishna (unpubl. data) considered this species to be a strong migrant, undertaking nocturnal migrations in neritic and oceanic waters. The species inhabits intermediate depths up to the surface, and according to Gopalakrishna, in the Indian Ocean this species is most abundant in the highly saline upwelling waters of the Arabian Sea and warm tropical low saline surface waters of the Bay of Bengal (unpubl. data). The occurrence of the species only during the dry season in the Campos Basin can be related to unstable conditions due to the mobility of the tropical water-South Atlantic Central Water interface, an increase in which is associated with the highter temperatures of the ocean-atmosphere interface (see: Tsuchiya & al., 1994; Mémery & al., 2000).

For Vervoort (1965, p.84), males, in the structure of P5 as well as in other details quite different from the above mentioned male specimens, have been described by Rose (1942, p.163) and referred to Amallothrix tenuiserrata (Giesbrecht, 1892), Rose's males record are very doubtful, the more so since the female S. tenuiserrata seems to have been absent from his collection.
After Benedetti & al. (2018, p.1, Fig.2) this species belonging to the functional group 5 corresponding to small sac-spawning detritivorous.
