Damkaer and Brodsky & al. do not agree on the synonymies (Cf. S. dorsispinosus Male & S. longispinus Female).
According to Vervoort (1946, p.154) this species is synonym of Spinocalanus spinosus.
Bode & al. (2017, p.612) underline that the high morphological similarities explain, why species initially described as S. stellatus and S. longispinus are currently all synonymised with S. horridus.
