Nota: During the 'Discovery' investigations some thousands of plankton samples have been taken from stations spread over the whole of the Southern Ocean at all seasons of the year, the majority south of the Antarctic Convergence. An arbitrary selection of samples has been made from hauls between the surface and a depth of 250 m, which means that they have been taken from within the limits of the Antarctic surface water. The data suggest that the Southern Ocean is an uninterrupted circumpolar belt with more or less uniform conditions prevailing in east and west directions, the range of planktonic species of the Antarctic surface water may be expected to extend as far as these uniform conditions persist, i.e to be circumpolar. |

The survey area was located predominantly within the seasonal ice zone, and in the month prior to the survey there was considerable ice coverage over the western section but none over the east.

The mean female size is 5.938 mm (n = 11; SD = 0.4407) and for only one male 5.300 mm. The size ratio should be around 0.90. | | | Rem.: | Meso-bathypelagic. Sampling depth (Antarct., sub-Antarct.) : 100-500-1000 m. According to Vervoort (1951, p.83) this species in the 'Willem Barendsz' antarctic collection is one of the most characteristic, though not the most common form and although the female occurs in many samples anyone male has been found, in spite of a very careful search. For the author, the form described by Brady (1918) as Euchirella plumosa is identical with E. rostromagna from probably Macquarie Island area. For Bradford & Jillett (1980, p.39) there is some possibility that E. latirostris and E. rostromagna represent the two extremes of variation in one species. The accounts of Park (1978) and Bradford & Jillett (1980) reach different conclusions as to the status of E. latirostris and E. rostromagna. The former synonymizes both forms under the name of E. rostromagna while stating that in his samples the rostrum shows considerable variation. Bradford & Jillett (1980) noted differences in size range (5.3-5.8 mm vs. 5.45-6.65 mm for E. rostromagna) and number of spines on basis 1 of P4 (respectively, 8-9 vs. 10-13) to be correlated with the dimorphism of the rostrum. These authors kept the two species separate. The Vaupel Klein's material revealaled no differences in size range, and confirmed the lack of distinction in the number of spines on basis 1 of P4 (11-14 in E. latirostris vs. 13-15 in E. rostromagna. The rostrum variability was found to apply only to E. latirostris; in E. rostromagna, rostral shape was found constant. However, several small but consistent differences have been observed: first of all, the dense and coarse plumosity of A1, this condition constitutes a conspicuous character in E. latirostris, compared to the more normal structures in E. rostromagna. For Vaupel Klein (1984a, p.46), the presence of various discrete characters, strongly suggest to discriminate between the two species. This hypothesis is corroborated by the completely sympatric distribution of both forms: both are exclusively Circum-Antarctic, and frequently co-occur in the same hauls. In considering the two species as conspecific, the authors should take care to, at least, separate them as ''E. rostromagna f. typica'' and 'E. rostromagna f. latirostris' up to future genetical analysis. | | | Last update : 17/06/2021 | |
