Endopods of swimming legs P2-P4 with terminal cone. P5 a free segment with 2 subequal terminal setae, the longer slifgtly spiniform; outer basal seta. P6 represented by spiniform setule on gonopore.

Female: P2-P4 endopod terminal ''spine set'' (combination of the lengths, shapes, and position of the three or two terminal spines on the endopods of swimming legs 2-4 for different Oncaea' species).

Nota: endopods of P2 and P3 with lateral spines not extending to base of subterminal spines.

Rem.: According to Heron & Frost (2000, p.1038) this species shows remarkable resemblance to O. latimana Gordeeva (1975), excepting the greater size difference, including the conspicuous, unusal male maxilliped. Gordeeva's illustration of the O. latimana P4 endopod does not show a terminal projection, but the subterminal spine, appearing to overlap the terminal spine, could possibly conceal a small projection similar to that of O. insolita.
O. insolita resembles O. illgi. also shows close affinity to three other species found in Antarctic: O. convexa, O. bowmani, and O. compacta. These species all have a relatively large Md, Mx1 and Mx2; the 3rd segment of A2 of the latter four species all have the inner seta, of the distal group of 7 elements, considerably reduced. The exterior form and ornamentation of the O. insolita labrum is especially similar to that of O. compacta.
For Böttger-Schnack & Schnack (2013, p.21) regarded as a member of the compacta-group, irrespective of its unusual character of a distal conical process on the endopodite 3 of P4.
