Disco compressus  Schulz, 2003   (M)
Ref.:
Schulz, 2003 (p.107, figs.M, Rem.: p.110)
Species Disco compressus - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissued from : K. Schulz in Sarsia, 2003, 88. [p.108, Fig.1].
Male (from off E Canary Is.): A, habitus (dorsal); B, idem (lateral left side); C, left A1; D, right A1.
Nota: Prosome dorsoventrally compressed (about 2.8 times longer than urosome). Rostrul lacking. Cephalosome and 1st pedigerous somite separate, 4th and 5th fused. Urosome 5-segmented. Genital somite with gonopore on right side. Anal somite longer than each of preceding somites. Caudal rami symmetrical, slightly longer than wide, with 4 well-developed setae (probably corresponding to ancestral setae III-VI of Huys & Boxshall, 1991). A1 asymmetrical, not reaching distal end of prosome. Left A1 geniculate, 20-segmented (with 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th, 6th and 7th segments partly fused, small distalmost 20th indistinctly separated from large penultimate segment. Right A1 24-segmented from dorsal but 23 segmented from ventral face (by lack of suture between 6th and 7th segments ventrally).

Species Disco compressus - Plate 2 of morphological figuresissued from : K. Schulz in Sarsia, 2003, 88. [p.109, Fig.2].
Male: A, A2; B, Md (mandibular gnathobase); C, Md (mandibular palp); D, Mx1; E, Mx2; F, Mxp; G, P1; H, P2; I, P3; J, P4; K, last prosomal somite with urosome and P5 (ventral).
Nota: A2 with coxa without seta; basis with 1 seta; endopod shorter than exopod, 2-segmented, 1st segment with 1 seta; distal endopodal segment bolobed, proximal and distal lobes with 5 and 6 setae, respectively; exopod 8-segmented, 3rd segment with 1 inner seta, terminal segment with 3 setae. Md with large basis, endopod slightly shorter than exopod, 2-segmented, 2nd segment with 3 setae; exopod 5-segmented (seal formula: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, respectively). Mx1 represented by rudimentary bud with single, curved spine. Mx2 strongly reduced, unisegmented, with 4 unequal setae terminally. Mxp weakly developed and indistinctly 7-segmented, coxa with 1 distal seta; basis and 1st and 2nd endopodal segments unarmed, 3rd segment with 1 small seta, 4th and indistinctly separated terminal segments with 1 and 3 setae, respectively. P5 slightly asymmetrical, uniramous, 5-segmented; proximal segment fused to intercoxal sclerite; coxa longer than basis; exopod 3-segmented; 3rd exopod segment of right leg with long, slightly inwards curved teminal seta and small outer distal spine; 3rd exopod segment of left leg with incomplete terminal seta and small inner distal spine.

Distribution map of Disco compressus by geographical zones
Loc:
NE Atlant. (off E Canary Is.: 29°49 N, 28°37 W)
N: 1
Lg.:
(883) M: 0,40; {M: 0,40}
Rem.: depth sampling: 150-300 m (bottom: 325 m). For Schulz (2003, p.111) the male is remarkable in that it displays an increased number of chemosensory aesthetascs on the proximal segments of both A1, without doubt of vital importance in mate recognition. A strong reduction of post-oral limbs (Mx1 to Mxp) suggests that the male is unable to feed.
