Nota: Mx1 with praecoxal arthrite with 8 spiniform setae; 3 setae on the coxal endite and 3 setae on the basal endite; the basipodite (2nd basal segment) with 5 setae; endopodite distinctly 3-segmented, with 4, 4, 5 setae, respectively; exopodite with 9 setae; basal exite acsent; coxal exite (epipodite) with 7 strong and 2 small setae. Mx2 with praecoxa and coxa completely fused, each has 2 endites with 3 setae, one of which is a spinulose appendicular seta; basis has 2 endites, the big proximal has 3 setae, the much smaller distal carries 2; the small endopodite 3-segmented with a total of 5 setae. Mxp has on its coxa 3 groups of 2, 3, 3 setae, respectively; the swollen median part of the basis has 3 setae, 2 setae occur on a small apical lobe; endopodite 4-segmented, with 3, 3, 3, 7 setae, respectively; Two of the setae on segment 1, and 1 of the setae on segments 2 and 3 have the branched structure characteristic of this genus; the branched seta on segment 3 is very strong; the 4th (apical) segment apparently results from the fusion of two segments.

Nota: Abdomen 5-segmented; segments and caudal rami in the proportional lengths 11 : 20 : 20 : 22 : 11 : 16 = 100. 2nd abdominal segment with hairs on the ventral surface about the middle of the segment; 2nd, 3rd and 4th segments furnished with coarse teeth on the distal margin. For Tanaka, P5 are in the main as those of P. serricaudatus , but the distal exopodal segment of left leg is prolonged into a long curved spine, and the outer edge spine on the 1st exopodal segment of the same leg is so long that it reaches the distal margin of the terminal spine of the 3rd segment.

Brackish. Estuary. Observed off Cape of Good Hope. For Sewell (1947) this form from Indian origin would have conquered the west African coasts by going round southern Africa. According to Grindley (1963, p.387) P. nudus differs from P. serricaudatus (T. Scott, 1894) to which it is closely allied: In both sexes the posterior thoracic margin is spineless (presumably the name nudus). The author is doutful as to wether this species is really distinct from serricaudatus but a re-examination of T. Scott's types will be necessary. For Wellershaus (1969, p.259) the armature and shape of the female thoracic segment 5, abdominal segments 1-2 and 5 show the main differences between P. serricaudatus and P. nidus from the Cape of Good Hope (see Tanaka, 1960; Grindley, 1963). The terminal dagger-like seta in the female P5 is longer than in P. nudus. The animals in the Cochin Backwater almost entirely resemble Vervoort's description ; they differ slightly in the shape of the female abdominal 1-2, in the male abdominal 1 and 2, and in the armature of anal segment of both sexes. Bradford-Grieve & al. (1999) do not acknowledge the synonymy with P. nudus, in contrast with Vervoort (1965, p.94-96).
