Bathycalanus adornatus  Bradford-Grieve, Blanco-Bercial & Boxshall, 2017   (F)
Ref.:
Bradford-Grieve & al., 2017 (p.110, Descr. F, figs. F, phylogeny)
Species Bathycalanus adornatus - Plate 1 of morphological figuresIssued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve, L. Blanco-Bercial & G.A. Boxshall in Zootaxa, 2017, 4229 (1). [p.113, Fig.71].
Female (from 25.082°S, 09.584°E): A-B, habitus (dorsal and lateral, respectively); C, forehead (lateral; D, genital double-somite (lateral left view); E, P1 (anterior view).
Scale bars: 1.0 mm (A, B, D, E); 0.1 mm (C).

Nota:
- Forehead in dorsal view produced into distinct short rounded projection dorsal to base of rostrum, bearing pair of stout small spine-like processes.
- Posterior corners of pediger 5, in lateral view, extended into irregularly-shaped, slightly sclerotised lappets that appear asymmetrical (in illustrated specimen, but possibly symmetrical.
- Posterolateral borders of pediger 4 also extended into symmetrical, irregularly-shaped, lightly sclerotised lappets.
- Genital double-somite symmetrical in dorsal view, with pair of small dorsolateral papillae and ventrolateral swelling; together these features contribute to lateral borders appearing angular when viewed dorsally. Genital segment wider than long (length : width = 0.86), widest at anterior 1/3, with small ventral genital operculum just anterior to midlength, seminal receptacles not observed.
- A1 broken.
- P1 exopod with articulation between exopodal segments 2 and 3 well-developed.

Species Bathycalanus adornatus - Plate 2 of morphological figuresIssued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve, L. Blanco-Bercial & G.A. Boxshall in Zootaxa, 2017, 4229 (1). [p.114, Fig.72].
Female: A, A1 ancestrral segments I-IX; B, same, segments X-XV; C, same, segments XVI-XIX; D, P2; E, P3; F, P4; G, P5.
Scale bars: 1.0 mm on all figures.

Nota:
A1 longest remnant with ancestral segment XIX present; ancestral segments II-IV fused. Anterior and posterior borders on ancestral segments XVI-XIX naked.

Species Bathycalanus adornatus - Plate 3 of morphological figuresIssued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve, L. Blanco-Bercial & G.A. Boxshall in Zootaxa, 2017, 4229 (1). [p.115, Fig.73].
Female: A, A2; B, Md palp; C, Md gnathobase; D, mx1 (anterior view); E, praecoxal arthrite of Mx1 to show 2 posterior surface setae (anterior view); F, Mx2; G, inner view of distal part of Mx2; H, outer view of endopod of Mx2; I, Mxp.
Scale bars: 1.0 mm (F, I); 0.1 mm on remaining figures.

Nota:
- A2 exopod ancestral segment IV with short seta extending short of distal border of exopodal ancestral segment VIII and bearing short setules.
- Mx1 praecoxal arthrite with 13 setae including 2 on posterior surface and 2 setae on anterior surface, 1 of them small; basal endite 2 with 3 setae; endopodal segments with 2 (unequal), 2 (unequal), 5+1 anterior surface seta.
-Mxp syncoxal endite 4 with longest seta extending beyond distal border of endopodal segment 2.

Species Bathycalanus adornatus - Plate 4 of morphological figuresIssued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve, L. Blanco-Bercial & G.A. Boxshall in Zootaxa, 2017, 4229 (1). [p.91, Table 10].
Morphological characters after identification key of Bathycalanus females and males.
Compare to other species of genus.

Main characters identification after species key :
1 - Mx1 praecoxal endite without setae.
2 - Anterior margin of head with 2 very small spine-like processes.
3 - P1 exopod segments 2 and 3 separate;
4 - Pedigerous somites 4 and 5 with laterally extended lappets; Genital double-somite angular anterolateral borders in dorsal view. (male unknown)

Species Bathycalanus adornatus - Distribution map 2Issued from : J.M. Bradford-Grieve, L. Blanco-Bercial & G.A. Boxshall in Zootaxa, 2017, 4229 (1). [p.84, Fig.46].
Distribution of Bathycalanus species;
Bathycalanus richardi (filled squareç; Bathycalanus bradyi (filled triangle); Bathycalanus milleri (open triangle); Bathycalanus dentatus (open square); Bathycalanus tumidus (open circle); Bathycalanus adornatus (open diamond); Bathycalanus pustulosus (filled star); Bathycalanus unicornis ( (filled diamond); Bathycalanus bucklinae (filled circle); Bathycalanus eximius (cross).

SE Atlant. (Abyssal plain off Namibia and Angola)

Rem.: Abyssopelagic (4000-5000 m).
For Bradford-Grieve & al. (2017, p.113) this species is very like Bathycalanus richardi except the genital double-somite in dorsal view is wider than long, with angular corners at the anterior onetyhird, and the posterolateral borders of pedigerous somites 4 and 5 are extended into irregularly shaped, conspicuous lappets. Genetic data suggest that this species is indistinguishable from some specimens of Bathycalanus bradyi, nevertheless, the authors cited do not hesitate to describe it as 'new' because of its morphological distinctness.
