The proportional lengths of the various segments of the body (cephalon to caudal rami) as 374:134:80:77:91:107:36:52:49 = 1000. Rostrum represented by a pair of short, stout spinous prominence. A1 25-segmented, overreaches the caudal rami by about the last 5 segments. Exopod of A2 with 7 segments (the two distal fused, though a trace of the line of separation can be seen). n Md the two rami of the palp are approximately equal length; the endopod bears 6 setae distally; the proximal segments of both endopod and exopod, as well as the 2nd basal segment, are ornamented with numerous small fine bosses. In Mx1 the biting lobe is well developed and bears 9 elongate spines, of which the anterior 7 are armed with small spinules, gradually changing to small \"buttons\" distally, and 2 other delicate, smaller setae; the 2nd inner lobe bears 1 stout seta and the inner 3rd posseses a pair of sub-equal setae; the 2nd basal segment with 1 seta; endopod absent; the exopod, like the proximal segments of the exopod and endopod of the A2, is ornamented with numerous small bosses and bears distally 2 setae; the outer lobe bears 9 setae, of which the three proximal are small and delicate, the 4th is of moderate thickness, the 5th is slender, the 6th is long and stout, and the distal three are like the 4th. In Mx2 the 1 st lobe bears 3 setae and a small pointed papilla; the others lobes bear respectively 1, 2, 3, 2, 3 setae, the distal setae are fringed with small and delicate \"buttons\". In Mxp the distal setae are provided with small delicate \"buttons\".

Known to occur at depths between 440 and 1400 m (Matthews, 1972). Sampling depth (Antarct., sub-Antarct.) : 0-1200 m. Sargasso Sea: 1000-1500 m (Deevey & Brooks, 1977, Station "S"); In spite of the great differences in size, Grice & Hulsemann (1967) do not doubt the synonymy between this species and Augaptilus subfiligerus. Also a close examination of E. rostratus (loaned by Scripps Institution of Oceanography) on which Esterly (1906) probably based the description of that species indicates that E. rostratus (Esterly) is identical to E. oblongus (Sars, 1905) For Matthews (1972) and Park (1993), the form reported by Tanaka & Omori (1967) as E. oblongus is no synonym of E. rectus as is maintained by Tanaka & Omori (1974, p.252). For Park (1993, p.47) this species can be recognized by its rostrum, which consists of a pair of short spiniform processes without filaments, the absence of setae on the first 7 segments of the A2 exopod, and the gnathobase of the mandibular blade which has a large distal tooth separate from a group of proximal teeth composed of 2 long and 2 very small spiniform teeth. Galbraith (2009, pers. comm.) relating to Augaptilus rostratus Esterly, 1906, and Brodsky, 1950 (= Euaugaptilus rostratus) is not absolutely affirmative concerning the synonymy with Euaugaptilus oblongus, because the length of outer spine of the exopodite 1 of P1 excceds the exopodite tip (contrary to E. oblongus, shorter). A variation of the lengths of the spines is possible, but the individuals in the North-eastern Pacific correspond to ("variation" ?) E. rostratus. First occurrence in Indonesian waters by Matsuura & al. (2010). For Itoh (1970 a, fig.2, from co-ordonates) the Itoh's index value from mandibular gnathobase = 2460.
