Distribution map of Haloptilus caribbeanensis by geographical zones
Loc:
Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Japan (Suruga Bay)
N: 4
Lg.:
(88) F: 6,42; (225) F: 5,83; (1117) F: 6,15; {F: 5,83-6,42}
Rem.: bathypelagic. Known to occur at a depth between 980 and 1900 m (Matthews, 1972).
For Park (1970, p.541) the female described is identical with that which Grice (1969) reported as H. furcatus; the specimen agrees with the description of H. furcatus from Sars (1924-1925) in the habitus and the anatomy of the mouthparts, particulary of the Md, but obviously differs from it in the following characters: the forehead is conspicuously produced, the endopod of P1 is 2-segmented instead of 3-segmented.
The specimen from Suruga bayslightly differs from the specimens of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico: the former has 5 teeth on mandibular cutting edge, but the latter 6 teeth. Three inner setae on the right 3rd endopodal segment of P5 are considered as abnormal, since the Suruga's specimen bears 2 inner setae on the left 3rd enopodal segment of P5 as in most augaptilids.
