Temorites spinifera  (A. Scott, 1909)   (F,M)
Syn.: Bathypontia spinifera A. Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 1 of morphological figuresissued frm : A. Scott in Siboga-Expedition, 1909, XIX a. [Plate I]II, Figs.1-16]. As Bathypontia spinifera.
Female (from Halmahera Sea): 3, urosome (dorsal); 4, A1; 6, A2; 7, Md; 8, Mx1; 9, Mx2; 10, Mxp; 11, P1; 12, P2; 14, P4; 16, P5.
Nota: A1 23-segmented, reacing the middle of the 4th thoracic segment. Exopodite 7-segmented. Exopodite of Md4-segmented, endopodite 2-segmented; the upper end of the biting part of the mandible with 2 spinifoom teeth, the mower end with a short stout and densely plumose. Mx2 with the spines on the apical portion, long and curved, the distal portion of the spines slightly flattened, and the inner marginfringed with fine short hairs. P5 symmetrical and without trace of endopodite.

Male: 1, habitus (dorsal); 2, last thoracic and genital segment; 5, right A1; 13, P2; 15, P5.
Nota: right A1 20-segmented

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 2 of morphological figuresIssued from : E.H. Wheeler, Jr in Smiths. Contr. Zool., 1970, 55. [p.28, Figs.77-85]. As Bathypontia sarsi.
Male (from near Puerto Rico): 77, habitus (lateral); 78, posterior portion of cephalothorax and urosome (lateral); 79, rostrum (ventro-lateral); 80, A2; 81, Md (gnathal lobe); 82, Md (mandibular palp): 83, Mx2; 84, Mxp; 85, P1.

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 3 of morphological figuresIssued from : E.H. Wheeler, Jr in Smiths. Contr. Zool., 1970, 55. [p.29, Figs.86-90]. As Bathypontia sarsi.
Male: 86, right P2; 87, left P2; 88, P3; 89, P4: 90, P5.
Nota: P5 differ from Sars' figure in that this specimen has a thickened, internal seta on the basipodal segment 2 of the right leg, where Sars shows no seta. This species is most readily distinguished from bathypontia (= Temorites) minor Wolfenden, 1906, by the angular shape of the posterolateral corner of the cephalothorax.

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 4 of morphological figuresissued from : G.B. Deevey in Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 1979, 92 (4). [p.726 Fig.1]. As Bathypontia spinifera.
Male: a-b, habitus (lateral and dorsal, respectively); c, Mx1 (setae cut off); d, A2 (setae cut off); e, Md (masticatory edge); f, Mxp; g, basal segments of Mx2; h, i, k, m, P1 to P4, n, P5.
Scale at bottom right for a and b, at bottom left for i-n, on center right margin for e, upper center for c, d, f-h. Scales in mm.

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 5 of morphological figuresissued from : G.B. Deevey in Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 1973, 86, N°30. [p.366, Fig.4, a,b, g]. As Bathypontia spinifera.
Male (from 32°10'N, 64°30'W): a, habitus with left A1 (dorsal); b, habitus with right A1 (lateral); g, P5.
Nota: The male resembles to T. similis, but have the characteristics P5 of T. spinifera (Scott, 1909, Pl.3, Fig.15), with a brunch of hairs on the inner side of the 2nd basipod segment of the right leg, and the partially fused 1st and 2nd exopodite segments proportionately much shorter tha in the T. similis male right leg.

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 6 of morphological figuresissued from : H.S.J. Roe in Bull. British Mus. (Natural History) Zool., London, 1975, 28 (7). [p.364, Fig.31]. As Bathypontia spinifera.
Male: a, habitus (dorsal); b, last thoracic segment and genital somite (right lateral side); c, P2; d, P5.
Bar scale 0.1 mm unless indicated.
Nota: Dr. Tanaka kindly sent me some specimens of T. similis, the male of which can easily be distinguished from T. spinifera as it does not have the very long spine on the tight P2.

Species Temorites spinifera - Plate 7 of morphological figuresIssued from : V.N. Andronov in Russian Acad. Sci. P.P. Shirshov Inst. Oceanol. Atlantic Branch, Kaliningrad, 2014. [p.85, Fig.22: 5]. Temorites spinifera after Deevey, 1973.
Male P5.

NZ: 5

Distribution map of Temorites spinifera by geographical zones
Species Temorites spinifera - Distribution map 2issued from : G.B. Deevey in Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 1979, 92 (4). [p.729 Fig.3]. Station locations in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico for 6 species of Bathypontia (= Temorites).
Cape Verde Is., Caribbean Sea, Caribbean, N Cuba, G. of Mexico, Sargasso Sea, off Bermuda (Station "S"), W Indian, Indonesia-Malaysia (Halmahera Sea), China Seas (South China Sea)
N: 8
(5) F: 3,3; M: 3; (8) M: 2,66; (316) M: 2,8-2,6; (317) M: 2,92-2,6; {F: 3,30; M: 2,60-3,00}
Rem.: bathypelagic. Sargasso Sea: 500-2000 m (Deevey & Brooks, 1977, Station "S");
For A. Scott (1909, p.184) this species is very closesely related to Temorites elongata (Sars, 1905), as Bathypontia elongata, but the P5 male is quite distinct.
For Deevey (1973 a, p.367), the male described and figured by Wheeler (1970, Fig.90) as T. sarsi is identical with T. spinifera.
