The mean female size is 0.740 mm (n = 14; SD = 0.0633) and the mean male size is 0.527 mm (n = 6; SD = 0.0543). The size ratio (male : female) is 0.74 (n = 3; SD = 0.0572).
Rem.: epiplagic.
For Frost & Fleminger (1968, p.64) C. paululus differs from pergens in the length of A1 segment 23 to segment 4. C. brevipes and parapergens females differ from paululus in body length and in the length ratio of exopodal segment 3/distal seta of P3 and P4. C. paululus is distinguished from furcatus by the relative lengths or Urosomal segments 1 and 3. Males of C. paululus are also distinguished from brevipes in body length and in the length of the left P5 relative to the urosome. C. paululus and parapergens differ in body length. C. paululus is distinguished from furcatus by body length and by the shape of the rostrum.
After Benedetti & al. (2018, p.1, Fig.2) this species belonging to the functional group 5 corresponding to small sac-spawning detritivorous.
For M. Hure & al. (2018, p.12) this species peaks in cold oligotrophic waters, whereas Clausocalanus pergens is abundant in cold oligotrophic waters, whereas C. pergens is abundant in cold eutrophic waters (Peralba & al., 2010); thus, differences in trophic conditions may explain why C. paululus was only detected in the second year of sampling at Dubrovnik (S Adriatic Sea).
