Saphirella enigmatica  Krishnaswamy, 1952
Syn.: Saphirella enigmaticus Krishnaswamy, 1952 (p.333, figs.); 1953 (p.65, Rem.)
Ref.:
Gooding, 1988 (p.364, Rem.)
Espèce Saphirella enigmatica - Planche 1 de figures morphologiquesIssued from : S. Krishnaswamy in Rec. Indian Mus., 1952, 49 (3-4). [p.334, Text-Fig. 5]. As Saphirella enigmaticus.
a, habitus (dorsal); b, A1; c, A2; d, Mxp; e, P1; f, spine on the posterior corner of the 3rd thoracic segment.

Nota: Cephalosome elliptical, with its posterolateral corners produced acutely; 2nd thoracic segment broader than long and has acute hind corner; tje 3rd segment about half as wide as the previous segment, carries a dagger-shaped spine and a seta on each side of its posterior margin; the next segment is narrower, leading to the still narrower abdomen.
A1 5-segmented, proportinate lengths of the segmets 1 to 5: 4, 6, 3, 2, 3. No aesthete.
A2 3-segmented; basal segment the longest, bears 1 marginal seta; 2nd segment slightly smaller and devoid of any spine or seta, the 3rd segment has a serrate inner margin and is bilobed, the inner lobe carrying 3 spines and a long, stout, curved seta and the outer one carrying 5 long setae.
All the mouth parts resemble those of S. tropica except the Mxp which is 2-segmented, the basal segment carrying 2 small spines and a long plumose spine towards the inner margin; the 2nd segment bearing a long spine in the middle and 2 long, stout and scarcely plumose setae towards the upper part.
The laminate rami of the only two pairs of swimming legs present are unsegmented. The exopodite bears 2 apical and 3 sub-apical dagger-shaped spines and 3 inner setae. The inner margin of the exopodite is hirsute. The endopodite has its outer margin fringed with hairs and carrioes a dagger-shaped spine and 5 inner setae.

Rem.: For Krishnaswamy (1952, p.335) this species falls into the 1st group with a caudal ramus short by contrast with the 2nd group where the length of the caudal rami is nearly 1/3 of the length of the abdominal segment.
For Sewell (1924), Nicholls (1944) and Gurney (1945) the Saphirella forms are immature belonging to an adult genus not yet discovered .
