Rem.: Bathypelagic. Hyperbenthic.
This species was originally sampled at more than 5.500 m depth. The female sizes given by Sars (1925) (1) and Grice & Hulsemann (1968) (100) (from SE Pacific) are exceptionally extended, 7.3 mm, and 8.91 mm respectively, but far from corresponding to lengths in Bathycalanus sverdrupi (Megacalanidae), the longest of known calanoïds (17-18 mm). Tanaka & Omori (1992, p.269) notes for Grice & Hulsemann's specimen that P5 appears to be slender than that of type specimen, and also the size. Farran (1905, Pl.VIII, figs.14-17) showed four different forms of P5, the number of spines on the distal joint is variable.
For With (1915, p.238) from the typical specimens of Farran's species (1905) it differs by the more pointed lateral corners of the 5th thoracic tergite, and by a somewhat different measurements of A1 [the segment 22 is as long as instead (in fig.20, Pl. VIII the two segments are of almost equal length)] of 1.3 as long as segment 25], but especially by the more distinct spinulation of P5. When the variability of the P5 is taken into consideration, there is no doubt that the two different forms belong to the same species.
