Figures
Planche 1 issued from : J.G. Greenwood in Proc. R. Soc. Qd, 1977, 88. [p.59, Fig.4]. As Stephos tropicus. Male (from 27°20'S, 153°15'E): a, habitus (lateral); b, same (dorsal view, slightly from right side); c-f, P1 to P4; g, P5.
Nota : Length ratio metasome to urosome 2.20 :1. Rostral region witout filaments. Cephalic region fused to pedigerous segment 1, pedigerous segments 4 and 5 fused. Posterior metasomal borders rounded, asymmetrical, that on right side being slightly larger than left, reaching to mid genital segment as rounded lobe. Urosome 5-segmented, proportional lengths of segments 30 :30 :17 :14 :9 = 100. Genital somite more rounded on left side than right ; right posterior margin extended posteriorly as rounded lateral lobe 2nd urosomal segment produced on left postero-ventral border into finger-like lobe. Caudal rami symmetrical, with 4 long setae on each. A1 24-segmented, symmetrical, reaching to level of 3rd urosomal segment. Right P5 4-segmented ; coxa (B1) and basis (B2) articulate at right angles ; exopodal segment 1 very elongate ; length similar to that of urosome ; basal 3rd laterally expanded with bilobed shoulder and small spinule on distolateral border of this region ; remaining two thirds cylindrical ; exopodal segment 2 pseudochelate : proximal half with rounded ‘thumb’ directed medially, length of thumb simolar to width of segment at origin ; distal part of segment lamellate and curved sharply at right angles toward midline of body forming ‘finger’. Left P5 5-segmented ; combined lengths of first 4 segments similar to that of right exopodal segment 1 ; coxa (B1) 3 times long as wide, basis (B2) slightly longer than wide ; exopodal segment 1 1/3 times length of basis, with obtuse prominence on mid-inner border ; exopodal segment 2 1.2 times length of exopodal segment 1, only slightly expanded, distal width being 1.3 times proximal width ; exopodal segment 3 complexly developed, length similar to that of exopodal segment 2, terminating in rounded finger-like orange pigmented lobe with 2 small lobes near base, long spiniform process (1.6 times length of segment) from middle of inner border, about 5 delicate aesthete-like processes proximally.
2 adult males collected in near-bottom hauls (Morteon Bay); for Greenwood (1977, p.60) no species of the genus have been described from Australia. The present form is characterised by: 1- presence of minute spinules on endopodal segment 2 of P2-P4: 2- right postero-lateral extension of genital segment, and left postero-ventral extension of 2nd urosomel segment; 3- form of the P, particularly the terminal claw of the right leg; only moderate expansion of sub-terminal segment on left leg; nature of terminal segment, its long spine and lamellate processes. After Bradford-Grieve (1999 a, p.25) this species belongs to type IV (see Genus Stephos).
