Distribution map of Tortanus (Eutortanus) terminalis by geographical zones
Species Tortanus (Eutortanus) terminalis - Distribution map 2issued from : S. Ohtsuka & J.W. Reid in J. Crustacean Biol., 1998, 18 (4). [p.794, Fig.10, A].
Horizontal distributions of several species in the subgenus Tortanus (Eutortanus) modified from Ohtsuka & al. (1992).
Species Tortanus (Eutortanus) terminalis - Distribution map 3issued from : S. Ohtsuka & J.W. Reid in J. Crustacean Biol., 1998, 18 (4). [p.794, Fig.10, B].
Paleogeography of the East China Sea and its neighboring regions during the Early Pliocene the dotted line indicatinig the present coastline (redrawn after Kizaki and Oshiro, 1977, p.542-549). Note the correstondace with the horizontal distribution of the subgenus Tortanus (Eutortanus).
The new species T. (Eutortanus) terminalis has so far been recorded from the type locality (arrowed in fig.10, A), and Shibushi Bay, Kagoshima (H. H. Ueda, pers. comm.) and Tanabe Bay (S. Ohtsuka, pers. observ.). In contrast to the fact that most members of the subgenus Eutortanus are resticted to brackish waters along the East Asian continent, terminalis occur only in neritic waters of hight salinity.
